When you talk about unique manufacturing facilities, you have to talk about the Scranton plant.
In addition to being the only Fine Paper plant that produces both graduation announcements and diplomas, the plant is located in the middle of a residential neighborhood, and a good number of the employees walk to work from their homes.
The company was launched in 1943 as a one-man operation in the garage next to the family home. The plant has been at its current location since 1950 when it outgrew the family garage and was moved into an 8,000 square-foot facility. A number of expansions have taken place over the years and have increased the plant size to more than 50,000 square feet today. The largest expansion was completed in 1974 and made it possible to manufacture diplomas at Scranton as well as graduation announcements and accessory items.
The products are sold throughout the Eastern part of the United States by that regions Herff Jones sales representatives to many high schools and colleges. That kind of coverage keeps the 120 employees who work at the plant busy all year around but especially after the orders arrive in March until they are delivered in May. In addition to the graduation announcements, name cards and diplomas, the plant also produces personal notes, note cards and miniature diplomas.
With a 78 percent return rate for seasonal employees, the Scranton plant is an asset to the community economy as well as the graduating seniors it serves.
