The Hamline University Class Ring

-It's History and Design-

The purpose of the Hamline ring is to represent the essence of the university in a visually appealing symbol. To accomplish this purpose, the ring incorporates Hamline's traditions: the founding date, the Latin words from the university's seal, and our campus landmark, Old Main.

Founded in 1854, the principles of Hamline University are contained in the words from our seal: "Religio, Literae, Libertas." Religio symbolizes the development of an individual's personal values and spiritual beliefs as a context for service. Literae symbolizes intellectual exploration through the liberal arts. Libertas symbolizes freedom in the pursuit of truth, knowledge, and justice. Today these principles are still upheld in the Hamline community and carried out in the curriculum of all schools and programs of the university.

The Latin words wrap around the tower of University Hall, more commonly known today as "Old Main, " and the heart of Hamline's campus. An historic landmark, Old Main was built in 1884, shortly after Hamline moved to St. Paul from it's original site in Red Wing, Minnesota.

The official Hamline ring is a permanent symbol of the university and its history. Its simple, elegant design will endure for years.
